Contributing to Make-A-Wish

Contribute money, goods or services, individually or through your company, school or organization. Individual contributions, corporate support, foundation grants and special events fund the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The Foundation accepts the donation of securities, automobiles or real estate, and a progressive Planned Giving Program helps structure deferred gifts such as bequests, life insurance and charitable trusts. In-kind contributions of good and services are also important.

All funds raised are used to fulfill the Foundation's mission in the Bay Area. Make-A-Wish does not engage in either telephone or door-to-door solicitations. Of money donated, over 80% of every dollar donated goes directly toward fulfilling wishes and related program services. In addition to wish granting, program activities include medical outreach, public awareness and volunteer-related functions. Administration and fundraising costs account for less than 20% of money raised.

Donations are tax deductible as permitted by law.

How You Can Help:

Cash/Credit Contributions
If you would like to contribute to the Greater Bay Area Make-A-Wish Foundation®, please choose from one of three methods: Mail us a check, call us at 1-800-464-9474 to give credit card information over the phone (Visa/Mastercard/AMEX/Discover) or if you prefer to give on-line, visit the National Make-A-Wish website. 80% of the monies from on-line contributions made through the national site are distributed to the chapters quarterly.

Memorial and Honorary Gifts
If you would like your gift to be a memoriam or in honor of a special person, we would be happy to send out an acknowledgment card on your behalf. Call us or visit the National Make-A-Wish website and click on tribute/memorial donations to locate an on-line contribution form.

Adopt-A-Wish Program
Wish funding requires substantial financial commitments. The Greater Bay Area Make-A-Wish Foundation® is committed to ensuring that it never has to decline a qualified wish nor limit the scope of a child's imagination for his/her wish due to lack of funds. In order to better serve this objective, we have created the Adopt-A-Wish program to raise the funds required to "adopt" or fund a wish in its entirety.

The following Adopt-A-Wish giving levels represent the average expense for each of the four wish categories.

$10,000 International travel
$5,000 Electronics or US travel
$3,500 Celebrity meeting, computer
$2,500 Disney, shopping spree

The Foundation honors the very personal nature of each wish and respects the confidentiality of the wish child and family. Click here for information.

Planned Giving Options
There are a variety of planned giving options available, including wills, trusts, charitable gifts, retirement plans and life insurance policies. We have sample language available for inclusion in wills; please contact us for a copy. Be sure to consult a lawyer for advice on which giving option best fits your particular circumstances.

Donate a Vehicle
You can donate your car, truck, boat, trailer or camper. Call 1-888-794-9474 to arrange for the donation. You will be asked a few simple questions and mailed a packet of necessary paperwork to arrange the pick-up of your vehicle. Approximately four to eight weeks after that you will receive a thank you from the Foundation providing you with the information you will need to determine your tax deduction.

Stock Contribution
You may choose to contribute stocks. You will receive a tax deduction for the average per share price of the stocks on the date of transfer, rather than the price you paid for the stocks, allowing you an even larger tax break if the stock has increased in value. Please contact us for more information or to arrange the transfer.

Donate Airmiles
Many major airlines allow their frequent fliers to donate airmiles to Make-A-Wish. The airlines “pool” these donated miles through a national clearinghouse and the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America® then distributes the miles to individual chapters. Since donor information is not sent directly to chapters, we are unfortunately unable to thank donors directly. Each airline has specific guidelines. Click here to link to the National website and find out more information about donating airmiles.

Workplace Giving/United Way
Many employers have partnerships with the United Way. Check with your payroll department to see if you can select the Greater Bay Area Make-A-Wish Foundation® for your payroll deduction.

Kids for Wish Kids®
This is a program about kids helping other kids. Students of all ages create ideas for fundraisers and then manage the projects with little or no help from their teachers. Students discover the value of community service, develop leadership skills and make a difference in the life of a child who is fighting overwhelming odds. Click here or contact us for information about this program.
